The international classical music label PENTATONE, based in the Netherlands, has announced the addition of Marin Alsop to its roster of artists. The partnership will include new recordings of complete symphony cycles by Mahler and Shostakovich, making Alsop the first woman conductor to record both surveys.
The initial release under the new collaboration will be Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, performed with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, where Alsop served as Chief Conductor from 2019 to 2025 and now holds the title of Honorary Conductor. The album is expected by the end of 2027. Future projects will also involve the Philharmonia Orchestra.
PENTATONE’s Managing Director Sean Hickey highlighted the conductor’s long association with the label’s team and described the collaboration as “an opportunity to shape her legacy further with new recordings of timeless orchestral music.”
Alsop, currently Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, said she was “delighted to join a label as respected as PENTATONE” and looks forward to reaching “new audiences around the world.”
With a career that has broken numerous barriers, Alsop has led major orchestras across the United States, South America, Austria, and the United Kingdom. Her extensive discography exceeds 200 recordings, spanning repertoire from Brahms and Dvořák to contemporary composers such as John Adams and Anna Clyne. Her 2024 recording of City Noir with the Vienna RSO was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Orchestral Performance.
Founded in 2001, PENTATONE is one of the leading labels in the field, known for high-fidelity productions and collaborations with artists such as Esa-Pekka Salonen, René Jacobs, Piotr Beczala, Lisette Oropesa, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and the Czech Philharmonic.
