Beethoven’s Grosse Fuge remains one of the most radical and forward-looking pieces in the string quartet repertoire. Conceived as the original finale to his Op. 130, the fugue challenged audiences of the 1820s with its complexity and scale. More than a century later, Igor Stravinsky famously described it as “the most absolutely contemporary piece of music I know, and contemporary forever.”
In this Wigmore Hall recital, the Chiaroscuro Quartet presents the complete Op. 130 with the Grosse Fuge restored to its place as the final movement. They are then joined by Cédric Tiberghien for Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F minor, a youthful masterpiece of symphonic breadth and emotional intensity.
The programme brings together two towering works—Beethoven’s bold structural imagination and Brahms’s passionate Romantic voice—interpreted by artists known for their clarity, depth, and stylistic insight.
