From ConcertLab in Utrecht — a space designed to explore new ways of filming and presenting music — pianist Julius Asal performs his latest project Siena Tapes. The programme places Maurice Ravel’s piano works alongside original pieces by Asal and the album’s producer Christian Badzura, creating a dialogue that reimagines Ravel’s sound world in a contemporary light.
The concert includes Ravel’s Prélude in A minor, Menuet sur le nom de Haydn, Jeux d’eau, and À la manière de Borodine, interwoven with Asal’s own Cascade I–IV and improvisations, as well as Badzura’s Petites Vagues.
“In a miraculous way, Ravel had access to all sound colours,” Asal reflects. “Even his more subtle works for piano contain shades and forces that you would usually find only in a complex symphony.”
This Stage+ broadcast offers the chance to discover a pianist who combines classical repertoire with improvisation and a personal creative voice, in a performance filmed with ConcertLab’s innovative production techniques.
