Gustavo Dudamel: “Los Angeles is written into my heart”

Gustavo Dudamel has shared an emotional message reflecting on his long relationship with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the city of Los Angeles, as he prepares to continue his work there in new artistic roles.

In a post published on Instagram, Dudamel described Los Angeles as a place “written into my heart,” saying the city, the musicians of the LA Phil, and projects such as the Hollywood Bowl and YOLA had shaped him profoundly during his years as Music and Artistic Director.

“Together, we have created something that feels so beautifully alive,” he wrote. “These experiences have changed me forever, and I look forward to the future with deep gratitude and love.”

Dudamel also confirmed that he will continue his relationship with the institution as Artistic and Cultural Laureate of the LA Phil, while also becoming Founding Director and Conductor Laureate of YOLA, the orchestra’s youth programme.

The conductor highlighted the importance of the Hollywood Bowl concerts “under the stars,” where, he said, “music seems to float into the sky and belong to everyone,” as well as YOLA’s social and educational mission. Founded in 2007, YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) has become one of Dudamel’s most significant initiatives in the United States, inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema programme.

“And to the incredible musicians of the LA Phil: thank you with all my heart,” Dudamel wrote. “It has been a true privilege to build a singular and extraordinary sound together with you.”

Dudamel officially concluded his tenure as Music and Artistic Director of the LA Phil this season after more than 15 years leading the orchestra. During his time in Los Angeles, he became one of the most visible and influential conductors in the international classical music world, expanding the orchestra’s global profile while championing contemporary music, community projects, and large-scale outdoor performances.

He is set to become Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic in the coming seasons, succeeding Jaap van Zweden.
