Giorgos Koumendakis’ term as artistic director of the Greek National Opera extended until 2029

Composer Giorgos Koumendakis has been reappointed as artistic director of the Greek National Opera for a fourth consecutive three-year term, the company announced. The new mandate runs from 13 January 2026 to 12 January 2029.

The renewal was approved by Greece’s Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni, together with the Deputy Minister of Culture, following a decision dated 18 December 2025.

Koumendakis has led the Greek National Opera since 2017 and has now completed nine years in the post. According to the company, he is the first artistic director in its 85-year history to be granted four consecutive terms.

In a statement released by the GNO, Koumendakis referred to the institution’s transition to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and outlined developments during his tenure, including commissions of new works by Greek composers, new productions, audience growth, international visibility, co-productions with European and American opera houses, tours in Greece and abroad, the expansion of the Alternative Stage, educational and participation programmes, and the broadcasting of productions through GNO TV. He also cited collaborations supported by public funding and private sponsorships.

Looking ahead to the new term, Koumendakis acknowledged forthcoming artistic and administrative challenges, while expressing confidence in the company’s stability with continued institutional and private support. He also thanked the GNO’s staff, board, sponsors, and audiences.
