Elīna Garanča withdraws from Salzburg Festival’s Ariadne auf Naxos

Elīna Garanča has withdrawn from the 2026 Salzburg Festival production of Ariadne auf Naxos, saying she decided not to add the role of Ariadne to her repertoire after months of preparation.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Garanča wrote that, despite initially accepting the invitation “with great appreciation and genuine enthusiasm,” she ultimately felt unable to establish the “artistic and emotional connection” with the character that she considers necessary for a convincing portrayal.

“I regard it as my artistic and professional responsibility to take part in a production only when I am fully convinced of my ability to do justice to a role in its complete psychological and emotional depth,” she wrote.

The Salzburg Festival has already updated the cast list for the new production, which will be conducted by Manfred Honeck and directed by Ersan Mondtag. Swedish soprano Christina Nilsson is now listed as “Primadonna / Ariadne” in the official cast announcement.

The production, scheduled for August 2026 at the Haus für Mozart, had been one of the notable Strauss titles in Salzburg’s upcoming season. Garanča’s announcement is especially striking because the singer made clear that the decision concerns the role itself, not merely this particular engagement.

One of the leading opera singers of her generation, Garanča is internationally acclaimed for performances ranging from Mozart and bel canto to French and late Romantic repertoire. Over the past decade, she has increasingly expanded into dramatic roles such as Kundry, Santuzza, and Ortrud, while remaining a frequent presence at major houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, and the Salzburg Festival.

The new Salzburg production of Ariadne auf Naxos will feature Kate Lindsey as the Composer, Eric Cutler as Bacchus, and Ziyi Dai as Zerbinetta.
