Daniel Barenboim has been forced to cancel his appearance at the Grafenegg Festival finale on 7 September after suffering a serious fall earlier in the week, which resulted in a shoulder injury.
The festival announced that Rudolf Buchbinder will take over the program together with the Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich. Instead of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1 and Symphony No. 1, Buchbinder will now perform and conduct from the keyboard Beethoven’s Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5.
In a statement, Grafenegg expressed its best wishes:
“Daniel Barenboim injured his shoulder, among other things, in a serious fall during Wednesday night and is currently unable to perform. We wish him a full recovery and a speedy return to the concert stage.”
The cancellation comes only days after Barenboim was announced as stepping in for Zubin Mehta, who had withdrawn from the same concert due to health reasons.
