OVERVIEW
Barbara Hannigan opens the 2025 Verbier Festival with her debut appearance as conductor, leading the Verbier Festival Orchestra in a colourful and wide-ranging programme, streaming on Medici.tv. Known for her genre-defying artistry, Hannigan brings together music from the symphonic repertoire, Broadway, and American modernism—culminating in a world premiere she co-created.

The concert begins with Berlioz’s exuberant Le Carnaval romain, followed by Haydn’s majestic London Symphony. After the interval, Copland’s Dance Symphony—originally adapted from his early ballet Grohg—offers striking intensity, while Rodgers’ Carousel Waltz adds Broadway flair in Don Walker’s arrangement.

The programme closes with At the Fair, a new orchestral suite based on music by Billy Barnes and others, arranged by Bill Elliott and Barbara Hannigan. It’s a festive and imaginative conclusion to a concert that launches the festival in unmistakably bold style.
