Opera Australia appoints Amy Lane as director of opera

Amy Lane has been appointed Director of Opera at Opera Australia, with her tenure beginning in September.

The British director joins the company after serving as Artistic Director of the Copenhagen Opera Festival, where she oversaw a significant expansion of the event’s programming and international collaborations. Prior to that, she held the position of Head Staff Director at the Royal Ballet and Opera in London.

Opera Australia said the appointment followed an international search. Lane will work alongside the company’s Music Director Andrea Battistoni and Chief Executive Alex Budd.

Lane’s directing career has included productions across Europe and North America. Among her notable projects is a complete staging of Der Ring des Nibelungen at Longborough Festival Opera, presented over four consecutive seasons. Her other directing credits include productions of Faust, Roméo et Juliette, and Gianni Schicchi for the Canadian Opera Company, as well as La Cenerentola at the Bregenz Festival.

Her work has also involved collaborations with major European houses including the Royal Danish Opera, the English National Opera, the Welsh National Opera, and the Semperoper Dresden.

Lane previously worked with Opera Australia as Revival Director for King Roger in Melbourne and Sydney.

Before moving into directing and artistic leadership, Lane worked in stage management at Covent Garden and earlier toured with Diva Opera. She also trained as a mezzo-soprano and studied English at the University of Bristol.
