Last week, in our Moto Picks section, we recommended Yanga , the recent album by Gabriela Ortiz featuring Alisa Weilerstein and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, underlining the cellist’s commitment to new music and her adventurous spirit.
This week, our video selection brings another side of that artistic drive. Weilerstein joins the Czech Philharmonic and conductor Tomáš Netopil in the fourth movement of Richard Blackford’s The Recovery of Paradise, shared on YouTube. The concerto was commissioned by the Czech Philharmonic and released on the Pentatone label.
Structured in four movements, each inspired by an element—Earth, Air, Water, and Fire—the work reflects on destruction and renewal, with the cello as both witness and voice of resilience. In this closing movement, Weilerstein’s commanding sound and the orchestra’s evocative textures bring to life a score that confronts climate catastrophe while affirming human perseverance.
