La Monnaie / De Munt has confirmed that French conductor Alain Altinoglu will continue as Music Director through 2031. The extension coincides with the tenure of Christina Scheppelmann as the company’s General and Artistic Director. The two have collaborated since 2001 and underlined their commitment to working together in Brussels.
Beyond his work on the podium, Altinoglu will remain involved in the company’s educational outreach, leading initiatives such as school workshops, family concerts, open rehearsals for young audiences, and activities of the MM Academy.
Scheppelmann emphasized that securing Altinoglu’s reappointment was among her first priorities, praising his artistic excellence and close relationship with both musicians and audiences. Altinoglu noted the achievements of recent years, including the complete staging of Der Ring des Nibelungen, and expressed enthusiasm for continuing to shape memorable musical experiences.
Since his appointment in 2016, Altinoglu has led numerous acclaimed opera productions and symphonic programs. In the current season, his engagements at La Monnaie include Verdi’s Falstaff and the Brussels premiere of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini. He will also conduct three symphonic concerts at Bozar, featuring music by Ravel, Berlioz, Grieg, Strauss, and Tchaikovsky.
