Wiener Staatsoper’s 2025–26 season: major revivals, new productions, and a full Ring cycle

The Wiener Staatsoper has unveiled its 2025–26 season, featuring five new productions, a complete revival of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen, and performances by some of today’s most celebrated opera stars, including Anna Netrebko, Jonas Kaufmann, Diana Damrau, Pretty Yende, Ludovic Tézier, and Juan Diego Flórez.

New productions

Five operas will be staged in new productions:

  • Smetana’s The Bartered Bride (Dirk Schmeding, conducted by Tomáš Hanus), with Franz Xaver Schlecht, Slávka Zámečníková, and Pavol Breslik.
    Oct 2–13, 2025 & Mar 23–31, 2026
  • Beethoven’s Fidelio (Nikolaus Habjan, conducted by Franz Welser-Möst), starring Malin Byström, Christopher Maltman, and David Butt Philip.
    Dec 16–30, 2025
  • Verdi’s Luisa Miller (Philipp Grigorian, conducted by Michele Mariotti), with Federica Lombardi, Freddie De Tommaso, and George Petean.
    Feb 7–Mar 1, 2026
  • Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (Jan Lauwers, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado), featuring Emily D’Angelo, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, and Katleho Mokhoabane.
    Mar 9–27, 2026
  • Bizet’s Les Pêcheurs de perles (Ersan Mondtag, conducted by Daniele Rustioni), with Kristina Mkhitaryan, Juan Diego Flórez, and Ludovic Tézier.
    May 14–29, 2026

A complete Ring des Nibelungen

Pablo Heras-Casado will lead a full revival of Wagner’s Ring cycle in the staging by Sven-Eric Bechtolf. Casts include Camilla Nylund, Michael Volle, Andreas Schager, Günther Groissböck, and Georg Nigl. The cycle includes:

  • Das Rheingold (May 19 & June 6)
  • Die Walküre (May 25 & June 7)
  • Siegfried (May 30 & June 10)
  • Götterdämmerung (June 4 & 14)

Star revivals across the repertory

Revivals span the major titles of the repertoire. Notable productions include:

  • Puccini’s Tosca with Elena Stikhina and Ludovic Tézier (Sep 20–29, 2025), and a second run with Anna Netrebko and Christopher Maltman (Apr 12–20, 2026).
  • Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier with Camilla Nylund and Samantha Hankey, conducted by Alexander Soddy (May 9–18, 2026).
  • Mozart’s Don Giovanni with Mattia Olivieri, Adela Zaharia, and Bogdan Volkov (Oct 29–Nov 7, 2025).
  • Bizet’s Carmen featuring Victoria Karkacheva and Piotr Beczała in one cast, and Pretty Yende and Freddie De Tommaso in another (Feb 21–Mar 3 & Jun 1–11, 2026).
  • Verdi’s La Traviata with Nadine Sierra and Xabier Anduaga (Feb 1–6, 2026).
  • Puccini’s La Bohème starring Juan Diego Flórez and Nicole Car (Dec 15–25, 2025).
  • Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande with Rolando Villazón and Kate Lindsey (Oct 27–Nov 5, 2025).
  • Strauss’ Elektra with Nina Stemme, Ausrine Stundyte, and Camilla Nylund (Dec 14–23, 2025).

Other featured singers across the season include Diana Damrau, Jonas Kaufmann (Die Fledermaus), Ermonela Jaho (Madama Butterfly), Sonya Yoncheva (Iolanta), Asmik Grigorian (Eugene Onegin), and Michael Spyres (Die Walküre).

Recitals and concerts

The recital and concert series includes:

  • An open-air season opening with Jonas Kaufmann, Elīna Garanča, Sonya Yoncheva, and Benjamin Bernheim (Sep 7, 2025).
  • Recitals by Rolando Villazón (Oct 14), Anna Netrebko (Feb 18, 2026), and Michael Spyres (Apr 28, 2026).
  • Other guest soloists include Nadine Sierra, Julia Kleiter, Günther Groissböck, and Asmik Grigorian.
