The Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires opens its new production of Werther by Jules Massenet, with the premiere performance streamed live and free worldwide via YouTube.
Written in 1892 and based on Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther, Massenet’s opera tells the story of unfulfilled passion and emotional conflict, set to music of remarkable lyricism.
The production is led by Ramón Tebar in the pit and staged by Argentine director Rubén Szuchmacher, with sets and costumes by Jorge Ferrari and lighting by Gonzalo Córdova.
In the opening performance, Jean-François Borras sings the title role alongside Annalisa Stroppa as Charlotte, with Jaquelina Livieri as Sophie and Alfonso Mujica as Albert. They are joined by Cristian De Marco, Sebastián Sorarrain, Pablo Urban, Rocío Arbizu, and Mauricio Meren, together with the Orquesta Estable and the Coro de Niños del Teatro Colón.
