Video of the week: György and Márta Kurtág play Bach

For over six decades, György and Márta Kurtág performed together, often seated at a modest upright piano, sharing miniature pieces from Játékok and intimate transcriptions of Bach. This 2012 recording from Paris captures one of those moments: the Sonatina from Bach’s Actus Tragicus, reimagined by Kurtág with quiet depth and clarity.

Márta Kurtág, who passed away in 2019, was not only a pianist of refined sensibility but also the composer’s closest musical partner, first listener, and lifelong companion. Their four-hand playing, tender and incisive, is a moving testament to a shared life in music.
