The Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson, one of today’s most distinctive interpreters, performs the first movement of Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 6 in E minor, D. 566, captured in this new video ahead of his forthcoming album Opus 109 on Deutsche Grammophon.
Following his acclaimed recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations — which earned him a GRAMMY Award, Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year title, and the German Record Critics’ Annual Prize — Ólafsson now turns to Beethoven’s Sonata No. 30 in E major, Op. 109, placing it in dialogue with works by J. S. Bach and Franz Schubert. The pianist explores the musical lines that connect these composers, tracing the evolution of expression that culminates in Beethoven’s late style.
Opus 109 will be released digitally, on CD, and on vinyl on 21 November 2025.
