The Vienna State Opera opens its 2025–26 season not inside its historic house on the Ring, but outdoors in Vienna’s Burggarten, with a large-scale gala concert titled Opern Air. The event recalls the symbolic reopening of the opera house in 1955, following its destruction during the Second World War, and commemorates Austria’s anniversaries this year: 80 years since the liberation from National Socialism and 70 years since the signing of the State Treaty.
For the first time in its history, the company begins a season with an open-air festival. Under the baton of Bertrand de Billy, the orchestra and chorus of the Vienna State Opera join a star-studded line-up including Elīna Garanča, Sonya Yoncheva, Jonas Kaufmann, Benjamin Bernheim, and Boris Pinkhasovich, alongside members of the Opera Studio and Opera School.
The programme spans Wagner, Verdi, Puccini, Bizet, Mozart, Berlioz, Cilea, Gounod, Humperdinck, and Strauss, offering a panorama of opera’s greatest arias and ensembles. Admission to the concert is free, while the performance is also broadcast by ORF III and streamed worldwide on the Vienna State Opera’s platform.
