Since 2021, the Netherlands Bach Society has been carrying out its All of Bach project, aiming to perform and record Bach’s complete works and share them online for free in high-definition video. A new recording is released every two weeks.
This time, they present Cantata BWV 12, Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, conducted by René Jacobs. One of Bach’s most frequently performed cantatas today, it was written for the third Sunday after Easter (Jubilate) and reflects on the suffering of earthly life. Tears, sorrow, anguish, and fear are inevitable for those baptized in Christ’s name. Yet, just as Jesus sacrificed himself for eternal life, redemption awaits those who endure with patience.

OVERVIEW
The Netherlands Bach Society was founded in 1921 to perform Bach’s St Matthew Passion in Naarden’s Grote Kerk. Over the years, it has grown into a prominent vocal-instrumental ensemble with an international presence. Specializing in historically informed performance, its musicians play on period instruments, focusing on the works of Bach, his contemporaries, and related composers. The ensemble presents over sixty concerts annually in the Netherlands and abroad. It also runs the All of Bach project, offering free high-definition recordings of Bach’s music online. Beyond performance, the Society engages in educational initiatives, including the Young Bach Fellowship, amateur coaching, and school programs aimed at fostering interest in early music.
