The Teatro Comunale Pavarotti-Freni inaugurates its 2025–26 opera season with Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, a cornerstone of early Italian Romanticism. Conducted by Massimo Zanetti, the performance will be broadcast live worldwide on OperaStreaming this Sunday, offering free access with English and Italian subtitles.
This new staging by Federico Grazzini—jointly produced by the opera houses of Modena, Reggio Emilia, Opera Lombardia, and Lucca—reimagines Verdi’s tale of power, faith, and freedom as a “modern fable” that merges past, present, and future. “In Nabucco, opposing human impulses come into play,” notes Grazzini, “the dark, violent force of oppressors and the luminous, compassionate hope of the oppressed. We wanted to blend elements from different eras to resonate with today’s audiences on a deeper emotional level.”
The cast includes Fabian Veloz in the title role, Marta Torbidoni as Abigaille, Riccardo Zanellato as Zaccaria, and Matteo Desole as Ismaele. The Orchestra Filarmonica Italiana and Coro Lirico di Modena complete the forces of this large-scale production that marks the opening of Modena’s lyric season.
