A founding myth, political intrigue, and personal vengeance come together in Attila, one of Giuseppe Verdi’s early operas.
Set against the backdrop of the Huns’ conquest of Italy, the story follows Odabella, a fearless warrior who swears to avenge her father’s death at the hands of Attila. Admired for her courage, she gains the Hun king’s trust — but remains committed to her plan, navigating alliances and betrayals with Ezio, a Roman general, and Foresto, her former lover.
Premiered in Venice in 1846, Attila initially received a cool reception but soon became a fixture in Italian opera houses, resonating with patriotic fervour during the country’s struggle for unification. In this acclaimed staging from the Heidenheim Opera Festival, director Matthias Piro and conductor Marcus Bosch present the opera in the atmospheric ruins of Hellenstein Castle.
With fine duets, trios, and quartets, and the stirring line “Avrai tu l’universo, resta l’Italia a me” (“You may have the universe, but leave Italy to me”), this is Verdi at his most direct and dramatic.
