On January 14, 1900, Tosca premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. This week, exactly 125 years later, the Opera di Roma pays tribute to that historic occasion with a revival of the opera in a production directed by Alessandro Talevi, which faithfully reconstructs the original staging of the drama.
The reconstruction, created in collaboration with the Ricordi Archive and based on the original set design sketches by painter, set designer, and illustrator Adolf Hohenstein, premiered in 2015 and has since become one of the standout attractions of the Opera di Roma’s seasons.
For the production, the musical direction is led by Michele Mariotti. Saioa Hernández portrays Tosca, Gregory Kunde plays Cavaradossi, and Gevorg Hakobyan takes on the role of Scarpia.
It seems like all roads lead to Rome for watching this production, but if you can’t make it, don’t worry: you can find a video of a 2015 performance on YouTube, where you can see the full reconstruction in action.
