Thierry Fischer extends tenure with São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra through 2031

The Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Osesp) has confirmed the extension of Thierry Fischer as its music director and principal conductor through the end of 2031. The new agreement covers the period from 2027 to 2031, following Fischer’s current contract, which runs until 2027.

Fischer has led the orchestra since 2020, after first appearing as a guest conductor in São Paulo in 2016. During his tenure, Osesp has strengthened its international profile, including a European tour in 2024 and an appearance opening Musikfest Berlin, marking a high-visibility engagement on the European concert circuit.

In a statement published on Instagram, Fischer referred to the extension as a confirmation of artistic continuity, writing that it “affirms a welcome sense of continuity and shared artistic direction,” and describing the collaboration with the orchestra as “deeply rewarding.” He also highlighted what he called the ensemble’s “collective curiosity” as a defining feature of the partnership.

In São Paulo, Fischer’s work with Osesp has combined core symphonic repertoire with contemporary music and works by South American composers, alongside longer-term thematic planning across seasons.

The renewal of Fischer’s contract forms part of a broader agreement that secures Osesp’s operational framework through 2030, providing administrative stability for the orchestra and its main venues. Within that framework, Fischer is set to remain at the helm of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra into the next decade, continuing a partnership that has played a central role in the ensemble’s recent international visibility.
