Teatro Colón Buenos Aires reveals 2026 season with Berlin Philharmonic visit

The Teatro Colón has announced its 2026 season, a programme defined by a compact opera lineup, a strengthened symphonic offering, and one of the most significant international visits in decades: the return of the Berliner Philharmoniker as part of a rare Latin American tour.

Berlin Philharmonic visit
After 26 years, the Berliner Philharmoniker will return to Buenos Aires for three concerts under Kirill Petrenko. The visit forms part of a Latin American tour and features repertoire by Elgar, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, and Strauss. Pianist Daniil Trifonov appears as soloist in Brahms’s First Piano Concerto. For the Colón, this marks one of the most high-profile international engagements of recent seasons.

A reduced opera lineup
The 2026 opera season consists of six staged productions, an unusually low number for the Teatro Colón, plus one opera in concert version outside the main venue. Despite the reduced offering, the programme includes several high-impact titles.

Die Walküre
A new production of Wagner’s Die Walküre, conducted by Alejo Pérez and staged by Davide Livermore, stands as one of the year’s artistic pillars.

World premiere: Dementia
The season includes the world premiere of Oscar Strasnoy’s Dementia, written with novelist Ariana Harwicz and commissioned by the theatre. This new work introduces a contemporary Argentine voice into the main-stage repertoire.

I Capuleti e i Montecchi
Bellini’s opera appears in a new production, adding bel canto to the season’s architecture.

Otello
A new staging of Verdi’s Otello reinforces the theatre’s focus on 19th-century repertoire.

Les contes d’Hoffmann
The Colón revives Eugenio Zanetti’s 2019 production, known for its distinctive visual world and strong theatrical identity.

Manon Lescaut (concert version)
Puccini’s opera will be presented in concert form at the Palacio Libertad, extending the theatre’s presence beyond its main hall.

Filarmónica de Buenos Aires: 80th anniversary
The Filarmónica marks its anniversary season with an exceptional roster of guest soloists. Pianists Asiya Korepanova, Nelson Goerner, Aristo Sham, Lise de la Salle, Boris Giltburg, and Daniil Trifonov join violinists Midori, Frank Peter Zimmermann, and Vadim Gluzman. The season includes Argentine premieres, major symphonic works, and collaborations with leading conductors.

Contemporary programmes
The Colón Contemporáneo series offers the Latin American premiere of Blade Runner Live, presenting Ridley Scott’s film with Vangelis’s score performed in real time. Additional programmes feature works by Sofia Avramidou and Francesco Filidei, reaffirming the theatre’s commitment to new music.

Colón Inmersivo
The immersive platform returns with new visual experiences—Monet and Aida—expanding the theatre’s approach to digital art and engaging wider audiences.

A season of contrasts
The Teatro Colón’s 2026 programme juxtaposes a reduced operatic offering with one of the most significant orchestral visits in recent memory, a reinforced symphonic agenda, and a strong focus on contemporary creation. The return of the Berlin Philharmonic emerges as the defining event of the year.
