Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski leads the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse in a program dedicated to three major Polish composers whose music reflects strikingly different moments in the country’s musical history.

The concert opens with Krzysztof Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, one of the most powerful statements of the post-war avant-garde. Written for 52 strings, the work explores an expanded sonic palette through clusters, unconventional bowing techniques and extreme registers, creating a haunting soundscape that remains one of the composer’s most emblematic pieces.

Japanese pianist Mao Fujita then takes the stage for Frédéric Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, composed when the composer was just twenty. The concerto combines lyrical intimacy with virtuosic brilliance, offering the soloist ample space to shape its expressive contrasts — from the poetic central movement to the dazzling finale.

The program concludes with Witold Lutosławski’s Symphony No. 3, widely regarded as one of the most significant symphonic works of the late twentieth century. Built around the composer’s distinctive use of controlled aleatory and dramatic orchestral gestures, the symphony unfolds as a dynamic exploration of tension and release, culminating in a powerful and decisive ending.
