Rheinberger’s Abendlied in a radiant new light

There’s a timeless quality to Abendlied, composed in 1855 by Josef Rheinberger when he was just fifteen. Perhaps his most enduring choral piece, it gently evokes the close of day — with the phrase Bleib bei uns (“Stay with us”) repeated like a whispered prayer, and the setting sun suggested in the downward sweep of the vocal lines.

In this beautifully crafted new performance by The Gesualdo Six, directed by Owain Park, Rheinberger’s sacred miniature becomes something intimate and cinematic. The clarity of the syllabic text setting, the blend of Renaissance-inspired counterpoint and radiant homophony, and the tender pacing are all captured in both sound and image. The video, produced by Hafren Park and Joseph Wicks for G6 Studio, pairs beautifully with the refined audio by David Hinitt and Adrian Peacock for Hyperion Records.

This track is part of the ensemble’s 2025 album Radiant Dawn, a rich journey through music shaped by light — from moonlit stillness to sun-drenched processions. Here, at the edge of twilight, Abendlied finds its quiet place.
