The delightful Pa-Pa-Pa-Papageno duet from The Magic Flute comes near the end of the opera and is one of its most joyful and humorous moments. It celebrates simple, human happiness—finding love, building a family, and embracing a carefree life.
It’s also a particularly enjoyable moment for the singers performing it, as seems to be the case for Rodion Pogossov and Tess Altivero. In this video, they rehearse the duet for Seattle Opera’s upcoming production, bringing energy and charm to their interpretation.
Rodion and Tess also reflect on the nature of this duet, where humour—reinforced by the playful “Pa-pa-pa” syllables mimicking the chirping of birds—is intertwined with the joy of finding love.
