New productions at the Bayerische Staatsoper for the 2025–26 season

The Bayerische Staatsoper has unveiled its programme for the 2025–26 season, centering on the theme inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s notion that “we are what we make ourselves to be.” This philosophical perspective informs the season’s new productions, which explore self-determination, existential choices, and the consequences of personal freedom.

Opera premieres

Die englische Katze (Henze)

The first premiere of the season will be Hans Werner Henze’s Die englische Katze, staged at the Cuvilliés Theatre in early November 2025. This new production by the Opera Studio is directed by Christiane Lutz, with Katharina Wincor conducting.

Die Nacht vor Weihnachten (Rimsky-Korsakov)

Later in November, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Die Nacht vor Weihnachten will be presented, directed by Barrie Kosky. The production marks Kosky’s seventh staging at the Bayerische Staatsoper. General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski will conduct.

Faust (Gounod)

Charles Gounod’s Faust will see a new staging by director Lotte de Beer. The production reunites her with costume designer Jorine van Beek and dramaturg Peter te Nuyl. Nathalie Stutzmann will conduct, making her debut in this role at the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Rigoletto (Verdi)

A new production of Verdi’s Rigoletto will be helmed by Barbara Wysocka, with Maurizio Benini conducting. The staging will feature collaborations with set designer Barbara Hanicka and costume designer Julia Kornacka.

Of One Blood (Brett Dean) – World Premiere

The season includes a major world premiere: Of One Blood by Australian composer Brett Dean. The opera, which revolves around Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I, will be directed by Claus Guth and conducted by Vladimir Jurowski.

Die Walküre (Wagner)

Following Das Rheingold in 2024, Tobias Kratzer continues his new Ring cycle with Die Walküre. Vladimir Jurowski will again take the podium for this significant installment in Wagner’s tetralogy.

Alcina (Handel)

The season will conclude with Alcina at the Prinzregententheater. Johanna Wehner makes her directorial debut at the house, while Stefano Montanari, a specialist in Baroque opera, will conduct.

Revivals and repertory highlights

In addition to the new productions, the Bayerische Staatsoper will present a rich selection of revivals. Among the titles returning to the stage are Ariadne auf Naxos, La traviata, Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Nabucco, L’elisir d’amore, Turandot, La Cenerentola, Fidelio, Parsifal, and Tosca. These productions, featuring renowned casts and conductors, continue to form the backbone of the company’s operatic offerings.
