A triple treat with Martha Argerich – Beethoven, Bach, and Schumann

This time, our video of the week recommendation comes as a triple bill: three pieces, one concert, and a single performer: the legendary Martha Argerich.

Filmed on April 4, 2025, at the Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio et de la Musique in Paris, this performance captures Argerich in top form alongside the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, conducted by Ion Marin. The programme includes Beethoven’s youthful Piano Concerto No. 2, followed immediately by two further encores, beginning with Schumann and culminating in Bach—a vivid portrait of Argerich’s range, poise, and depth.

🎬 Below, you can enjoy all three performances, recently released by France Musique:

  • Ludwig van Beethoven – Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 19
Often overshadowed by his later concertos, this early work already reveals Beethoven’s distinct voice. Argerich and Ion Marin shape it with rhythmic vitality, elegance, and warmth—especially in the expansive Adagio and the joyful Rondo.

  • Robert Schumann – Kinderszenen No. 1: “Von fremden Ländern und Menschen”
As the first encore, Argerich brings intimacy and lyrical clarity to this beloved opening miniature from Scenes from Childhood.

  • Johann Sebastian Bach – Gavotte from English Suite No. 3 in G minor, BWV 808
A sparkling close to the evening, Argerich’s take on this Gavotte combines elegance, swing, and a sense of playful nobility.
