Martha Argerich has cancelled her appearances at the Lucerne Festival (28 August) and the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest (31 August) due to acute exhaustion and personal reasons, according to the organizers of both events.
She was scheduled to perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, conducted by Daniel Harding. Both concerts will go ahead with Seong-Jin Cho as soloist.
The South Korean pianist will play Beethoven’s First Concerto with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra on both dates. He is already scheduled to perform Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto in Lucerne on 26 August, with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Earlier this summer, he appeared at the Verbier Festival in chamber repertoire alongside Renaud and Gautier Capuçon.
Martha Argerich is expected to return to the stage on 15 September in Bucharest, for a concert with the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Charles Dutoit.
