Maria João Pires pays tribute to Alfred Brendel

Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires has shared a heartfelt message in memory of Alfred Brendel, following the news of his death. In her post, she described him as “the genius who leaves, with an immense void but also an eternal legacy,” praising his unique understanding of Beethoven and his lasting contribution to music.

Pires wrote:

“Only now can I find words for this news that touched me deeply.
Alfred Brendel, the genius who departs, leaving an immense void but also an eternal legacy.
He knew — like no one before him, and certainly no one after — how to decipher Beethoven in his fullness: beauty, truth, depth, strength… even the purest, most lyrical, and heroic inspiration.
Everything he did for music throughout his life became an invaluable gift for all of us.
We owe him a knowledge that, for me, is sacred.
I will thank him always, always, and forever. Thank you.”

The homage comes two months after Pires announced a temporary withdrawal from the stage due to health problems. No date has been set for her return.

Brendel, born in 1931, was widely regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of the classical and romantic repertoire, especially the music of Beethoven, Schubert, and Mozart. His death marks the passing of a figure who shaped generations of listeners and performers.
