Maria João Pires announces that she will step away from the stage for an indefinite period

Maria João Pires has announced that she will step away from the concert stage for an indefinite period following a recent cerebrovascular health issue. The renowned Portuguese pianist shared a personal statement on social media, reflecting on her condition and expressing a desire to focus on rest, reflection, and personal growth.

“A cerebrovascular health problem appeared, which I take as a sign — perhaps a warning,” Pires wrote. “I will dedicate this time to rediscovering balance between body and spirit, and to finding joy in stepping back, reading, meditating, and learning from the lessons life wants to teach me.”

Earlier this week, Teatro Circo de Braga reported that Pires had suffered a minor stroke, leading to the cancellation of several upcoming performances in Portugal, including appearances at the Festival de Sintra, Teatro das Figuras in Faro, and the Theatro Circo.

Born in Lisbon in 1944, Maria João Pires is considered one of the most influential pianists of her generation. Her interpretations of Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, and Chopin are known for their clarity, sensitivity, and poetic insight. In recent years, she has also focused on educational and social projects, advocating for music as a path toward introspection and connection.

Her message concludes with a note of gratitude: “I thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your patience, support, and words of comfort.”
