The NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra launches its 2025–26 season from the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg with a programme that combines virtuosity, late Romantic colour, and symphonic power.
At the centre of the evening, Kirill Gerstein brings his brilliance and versatility to two contrasting works for piano and orchestra. Richard Strauss’s youthful Burleske unfolds with restless energy and sparkling interplay, while Sergei Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini dazzles with its variation form, balancing devilish virtuosity with lyrical depth.
After the interval, Alan Gilbert leads the orchestra in Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, the “Titan.” From the awakening of nature in the opening movement to the triumphant finale, Mahler’s First encapsulates the optimism and ambition of a composer at the threshold of greatness. Its mix of humour, melancholy, and overwhelming energy makes it a fitting symbol for the start of a new season.
This free live stream offers audiences worldwide the chance to experience the Elbphilharmonie’s celebrated acoustics and the orchestra’s vibrant sound at the very moment it embarks on a new musical journey.
