American conductor Joseph Swensen leads the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine in a programme that highlights the fertile dialogue between French and American music in the early 20th century. At the centre of the evening is Lucas Debargue, who brings his distinctive voice to two emblematic works that crystallise this transatlantic exchange: Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major.
The concert opens with Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, a suite of refined colours and fairy-tale imagery, before moving into the rhythmic vitality and jazz-inflected language shared—each in his own way—by Ravel and Gershwin. The programme closes with Gershwin’s An American in Paris, a tone poem that captures the exhilaration and disorientation of modern urban life and completes this Franco-American portrait with exuberance and flair.
