Few operas embody the wit, humanity and irresistible charm of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro. The story unfolds around the philandering Count Almaviva, constantly outwitted by his clever servant Figaro and Susanna, as they plot to safeguard their marriage. With the disillusioned Countess and the exuberant pageboy Cherubino, the opera becomes a lively reflection on love, power and social change.

Mozart and his librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte drew on Beaumarchais’ play to capture the shifting dynamics of late 18th-century Europe, when Emperor Joseph II’s reforms gave new freedoms to servants. In this new production from the Royal College of Music, director Jeremy Sams relocates the action to a fading French château of the 1980s, a setting that mirrors the decline of privilege and the rise of new voices.

OperaVision’s broadcast showcases a young cast of singers and musicians from the RCM, led by conductor Michael Rosewell, offering not only a fresh take on Mozart’s classic but also a glimpse of opera’s future.
