The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra presents a live-streamed concert from Amsterdam conducted by Klaus Mäkelä, featuring the Dutch premieres of two concertos by Guillaume Connesson. Soloists Ivan Podyomov (oboe) and Emily Beynon (flute), both principals of the RCO, are at the heart of a programme that moves from French colour to Hungarian intensity.

Opening the concert is Ravel’s Shéhérazade, a rarely heard orchestral miniature filled with exotic atmosphere. Connesson’s Les belles heures and Danses concertantes, written respectively for Podyomov and Beynon, showcase the composer’s rhythmic vitality and cinematic orchestration. The evening concludes with Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin, a bold orchestral suite that caused scandal at its premiere but has since earned a place as one of the composer’s most daring and theatrical scores.
