One of the most anticipated moments of the season for the Berlin Philharmonic has arrived: Joana Mallwitz takes the podium for the first time.
Mallwitz is no stranger to Berlin audiences. Since 2023, she has been the chief conductor of the city’s other major orchestra, the Konzerhaus Orchester Berlin —her first purely symphonic post. Last year, she recorded a highly praised Kurt Weill album with the ensemble, recognized by critics as one of the best releases of the year.
Her name has become a fixture in discussions about today’s leading conductors. Whenever a prestigious conducting post has opened in recent years, she has been mentioned—if only as a rumored candidate. The demand for her artistry has long surpassed her availability.
For this debut, she is joined by pianist Anna Vinnitskaya, who will perform Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, op. 30. The rest of the program includes Prokofiev’s War and Peace, Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler Symphony, and Ravel’s La Valse.
