In this new production from the Opéra National de Bordeaux, director Stéphane Braunschweig explores Iolanta as a poetic and spiritual journey through light and darkness. Tchaikovsky’s final opera, premiered alongside The Nutcracker in 1892, tells the story of a blind princess whose secluded existence is transformed by love and revelation.

For Braunschweig, light becomes both a scenic element and a metaphor: “As Iolanta ends with a gaze turned towards the heavens and a song of glory to the divine light, I see a sort of holy communion, a reconciliation with the world,” he writes. “Beneath its apparent simplicity lies the dazzling beauty of a masterpiece.”

The production features Claire Antoine in the title role, with Ain Anger, Vladislav Chizhov, Julien Henric, and Ariunbaatar Ganbaatar, joined by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine and the Chorus of Opéra National de Bordeaux.

Streamed live on OperaVision, this performance offers a rare opportunity to experience Tchaikovsky’s deeply human drama, where sight, truth, and faith intertwine in delicate harmony.
