Filmed at the Salzburg Festival in June 2025 and now available for free on Arte.TV, Hotel Metamorphosis brings together the imagination of Barrie Kosky and the music of Antonio Vivaldi in an exuberant stage pasticcio inspired by Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Set in a luxurious hotel room, mythological figures come and go — Orpheus, Eurydice, Arachne, Pygmalion, Myrrha, and Narcissus — their stories intertwined with Vivaldi’s arias, choruses, and instrumental works. Framed by poems by Rilke, Kosky’s staging transforms the ancient tales into a meditation on desire, vanity, and metamorphosis.
The cast reunites several of today’s leading Baroque artists: Cecilia Bartoli, Lea Desandre, Nadezhda Karyazina, and Philippe Jaroussky, with the actress Angela Winkler as the narrating Orpheus. Under the baton of Gianluca Capuano, Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco capture Vivaldi’s shifting moods — from melancholy to exuberance — with theatrical brilliance.
Conceived “as a pasticcio for our times,” Hotel Metamorphosis celebrates opera’s capacity for transformation, where myth, theatre, and Baroque virtuosity merge in a kaleidoscope of human emotion.
