In 1761, Joseph Haydn arrived at the court of Prince Esterházy, beginning one of the most fruitful partnerships in music history. To mark his debut, Haydn composed three radiant symphonies — Le matin, Le midi and Le soir — each portraying a different time of day and designed to showcase the virtuosity of the prince’s newly assembled orchestra.
This concert, filmed at the Esterházy Palace where those works first resounded, unites Il Giardino Armonico and its director Giovanni Antonini, among today’s foremost Haydn interpreters. Between the symphonies, Kate Lindsey appears in the dramatic cantata Arianna a Naxos, offering a moment of operatic intensity that contrasts beautifully with the instrumental sparkle surrounding it.
A vivid journey from dawn’s awakening to evening’s storm, this program captures Haydn’s youthful imagination — an irresistible invitation to revisit the composer’s earliest masterpieces in the setting that inspired them.
