Charles Gounod’s Faust remains one of the most frequently performed French operas, surpassed only by Carmen. Since its premiere in 1859, it has captivated audiences with its blend of romance, drama, and moral conflict, inspired by Goethe’s tragedy.

In this staging from Opéra de Lille, director Denis Podalydès highlights the opera’s ambiguities by restoring Jules Barbier’s spoken dialogues. He describes the work as “a fundamentally anti-Puritan opera in a Puritan world,” reflecting the contradictions of France’s Second Empire.

The production features Julien Dran as Faust, Vannina Santoni as Marguerite, and Jérôme Boutillier as Méphistophélès, with Louis Langrée leading the Orchestre National de Lille and the Chœur de l’Opéra de Lille.

The performance was recorded in May 2025 and is available for free streaming worldwide on OperaVision until March 2026.
