Overview
Three centuries after its premiere, Handel’s Giulio Cesare returns in force at the 2025 Salzburg Festival in a new production by Dmitri Tcherniakov, known for his radical psychological readings.
In this new staging, political ambition, desire, and betrayal collide in a volatile Egypt. Christophe Dumaux stars as Cesare, joined by Olga Kulchynska as a magnetic Cleopatra and Lucile Richardot as the grieving Cornelia. Their fates are shaped by a web of power games, revenge, and seduction, in a narrative that resonates with surprising urgency today.
At the podium, Emmanuelle Haïm leads her period ensemble Le Concert d’Astrée in one of Handel’s richest and most theatrical scores — music full of grandeur, tenderness, and flair.
A major operatic event of the summer, brought to life by a stellar cast and creative team.
