In this concert from Frankfurt’s Alte Oper, Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić leads the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in a radiant programme that evokes musical landscapes from Croatia and Italy.
At its centre, Alexander Malofeev performs Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, one of the most emblematic works of the Romantic repertoire. Still in his early twenties, the Russian pianist returns to the orchestra after his memorable 2022 appearance, when he replaced Evgeny Kissin at short notice in Rachmaninov’s Third Concerto — a performance that revealed not only technical brilliance but a refined poetic instinct.
Repušić frames the concerto with three orchestral postcards: Blagoje Bersa’s glowing symphonic poem Sonnige Felder, Tchaikovsky’s Italian-themed Capriccio italien, and Ottorino Respighi’s sumptuous Pini di Roma, a tone poem of cinematic grandeur that closes the evening in full orchestral colour.
