The SWR Symphonieorchester begins its 2025/26 season with a concert that also marks the debut of its new chief conductor, François-Xavier Roth. Streaming live from Stuttgart’s Liederhalle, the programme reflects Roth’s trademark eclecticism, placing Baroque innovation, 20th-century modernism, and Romantic grandeur side by side.

The evening opens with Jean-Féry Rebel’s audacious Les élémens, whose musical depiction of chaos still sounds strikingly modern despite its Baroque origins. At the centre of the programme is Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia, a milestone of post-war music that blends voices and orchestra in a dense and multi-layered soundscape, performed here with members of the SWR Vokalensemble. The concert closes with the expansive Schubert Symphony in C major, D 944, known as the “Great”, one of the composer’s most enduring achievements.

With this programme, Roth not only inaugurates his tenure but also signals the stylistic breadth he intends to cultivate with the orchestra.
