The Berliner Philharmoniker celebrates its traditional EuropaKonzert on 1 May 2025 under the baton of Riccardo Muti, performing live from the historic Teatro Petruzzelli in Bari.
This year’s programme opens with the dynamic energy of Rossini’s William Tell Overture, followed by the rarely performed ballet music Le Quattro Stagioni from Verdi’s I vespri siciliani. The concert concludes with Brahms’ Second Symphony, a work that combines lyrical warmth with symphonic grandeur.
The EuropaKonzert is held annually on 1 May in culturally significant locations across Europe, marking the anniversary of the orchestra’s founding in 1882. This year’s event is also part of the official commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Bari, which took place in September 1943.
OVERVIEW
Teatro Petruzzelli is the largest theatre in southern Italy and the fourth largest in the country. Located in the coastal city of Bari, it has been a landmark of cultural life since its inauguration in 1903. The venue has hosted performances by some of the world’s most renowned artists, from Herbert von Karajan to Luciano Pavarotti.
In 1991, the theatre suffered a devastating fire and remained closed for nearly two decades. It was painstakingly rebuilt and finally reopened in 2009. Its restoration preserved the building’s historic façade while upgrading its acoustics and facilities to modern standards. With a capacity of over 1,200 seats, the Petruzzelli stands as a symbol of resilience and renewal — a fitting stage for this year’s EuropaKonzert.
