Domingo Hindoyan to succeed James Conlon as music director of LA Opera

LA Opera has announced that Venezuelan conductor Domingo Hindoyan will take over as Richard Seaver Music Director starting in the 2026–27 season, succeeding James Conlon, who has led the company since 2006.

Hindoyan made his debut with the company in autumn 2024 conducting Romeo and Juliet, and was chosen after an international search. According to LA Opera, his operatic and symphonic experience, artistic vision, and collaborative spirit were key factors in his appointment.

Born in Caracas, Hindoyan began his musical training as a violinist in El Sistema, Venezuela’s renowned music education program that provides free classical training to young musicians across the country. He later studied conducting at the Haute École de Musique de Genève under Laurent Gay.

James Conlon, who has been a central figure in the company’s musical leadership for nearly two decades, will continue his relationship with LA Opera as Conductor Laureate following the company’s 40th anniversary season.

Currently, Domingo Hindoyan is principal conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
