Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra announces the death of principal trombonist Cristian Ganicenco

The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO) has announced the death of its Principal Trombone, Cristian Ganicenco, who passed away after a private battle with cancer.

A member of the orchestra since 1999, Ganicenco was described by the CSO as a musician whose artistry, discipline, and warmth shaped both the orchestra’s sound and its culture. Born in Romania, he studied in Iași and Bucharest, later continuing his education at Carnegie Mellon University and Rutgers University in the United States.

Ganicenco made his solo debut with the CSO in 2003, performing Paul Creston’s Fantasy for Trombone and Orchestra. Beyond his orchestral work, he recorded extensively, composed original music, and co-founded ensembles including FG Brass.

Known for his refined, lyrical playing, Ganicenco was admired for his elegance and expressive control, bringing a distinctive voice to the trombone section without seeking the spotlight. Colleagues also remembered his humility, humor, and generosity — qualities that made him a trusted mentor and friend within the orchestra.

Even during his illness, he continued to perform, maintaining his commitment to music and the ensemble. “Cristian’s influence lives on in the sound of the Orchestra, in the countless lives he touched and in the relationships he built here,” the CSO wrote in its statement. “Through music, we will continue to honor his memory.”
