The Berliner Philharmoniker’s traditional season finale at the Waldbühne returns with a vibrant celebration of the Americas, led by Gustavo Dudamel. Broadcast live from the iconic Berlin amphitheatre, this open-air concert blends North and South American sounds with dance, ritual, and cinematic colour.
The journey begins in Mexico, where Gabriela Ortiz evokes the sacred blue deer Kauyumari, and Arturo Márquez pays tribute to the danzón’s cross-cultural history. In the United States, Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs capture folk humour and nostalgia, voiced here by bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green. Venezuela and Puerto Rico bring rhythmic fireworks with Castellanos’ Santa Cruz de Pacairigua and Sierra’s Alegría—a kinetic burst of tropical modernism.
The evening closes with Ellington’s tribute to three kings—including Martin Luther King—and Bernstein’s West Side Story dances, where mambo and jazz conjure a New York as restless as it is hopeful.
