The Berliner Philharmoniker launches its 2025/26 season under the baton of Kirill Petrenko with a programme that brings together passion, virtuosity and symphonic grandeur.
The concert opens with Robert Schumann’s Manfred Overture, a dramatic score inspired by Byron’s dark literary figure. From there, the spotlight shifts to the orchestra’s own principal oboist, Albrecht Mayer, as soloist in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Oboe Concerto — a work that combines striking virtuosity with the composer’s distinctive sound world.
After the interval comes Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 1, a piece the composer laboured over for many years but which finally established him as the successor to Beethoven in the symphonic tradition. Its intensity, depth and ultimately triumphant finale make it one of the most emblematic symphonies of the late Romantic repertoire.
With this programme, the Berlin Philharmonic sets the tone for a season underlining both tradition and innovation, opening its year with works that span the 19th and 20th centuries and showcase the orchestra’s breadth of artistry.
