Every summer, the Bayreuth Festival unveils a new staging of one of Wagner’s operas—an event followed closely by opera lovers around the world. This year, the spotlight falls on Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Wagner’s only mature comic opera, known for its blend of wit, warmth, and profound reflections on the nature of art and creativity.
The 2025 production is directed by Matthias Davids, renowned for his acclaimed work in musical theatre. His fresh perspective promises a revitalized approach to the opera’s themes of tradition versus innovation, set in the world of 16th-century Nuremberg guilds. Leading the musical forces is Daniele Gatti, who conducts the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra and Chorus alongside a distinguished international cast.
Georg Zeppenfeld stars as the wise and compassionate cobbler-poet Hans Sachs, with Michael Spyres as the impetuous Walther and Christina Nilsson as the spirited Eva. The cast also includes Michael Nagy (Beckmesser), Christa Mayer (Magdalene), and Matthias Stier (David), among others.
