The sight of Daniel Barenboim back on the podium of the Berlin Philharmonic carries special weight. In recent years, the orchestra’s Honorary Conductor has scaled back his appearances due to health concerns, and in 2022 he revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Just weeks ago, he also cancelled an appearance at the Grafenegg Festival after a fall and shoulder injury.
Now he returns to the Philharmonie with a programme that spans Romantic contrasts: Weber’s Oberon Overture, Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony (D 759), and Beethoven’s Seventh. Schubert’s inward drama and Beethoven’s radiant optimism set a striking frame for Barenboim’s comeback with his orchestra, underlining both his resilience and his enduring bond with the Berlin Philharmonic.
