To mark the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, the 2025 Verbier Festival presents a landmark chamber concert featuring an exceptional ensemble: Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Mischa Maisky, Antoine Tamestit, and the Ébène Quartet.

Four of the composer’s most emblematic chamber works are featured in the program, each revealing different facets of Shostakovich’s creative voice and inner world. The concert opens with the Cello Sonata, composed in 1934 before his fall from political grace, and continues with the widely acclaimed Piano Quintet, which brought the composer renewed favor during the Stalin era.

After the intermission, Argerich and Kissin perform the rarely heard Concertino for Two Pianos, written for Shostakovich’s son. The evening concludes with the haunting Viola Sonata, his final work—a deeply introspective and self-referential piece composed just weeks before his death.

Broadcast live on July 30 via both Medici.tv and Stage+, this concert is one of the high points of this year’s Verbier Festival.
